It's so strange to hear people speak of Namagunga in such loving terms. But then so much has changed; I left in 2007, and very little of the memories I have still warm my heart.

In response to:Namgunga Hymns

I remember singing this song at Mass at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Madison Wisconsin. I once wrote to ask for the lyrics to one of those hymns, and they sent them to me!

Wake up my people.
Wake up, give a shout!
Wake up my people.
Know what life's about!
And wake up to the needs of all the ones who suffer sorrow.
Wake up promise now to do your best to change tomorrow.

Wake up my people.
And open every door.
Wake up my people.
Live life loving ever more!

I expect that there was more to this song than I remember. Another one was:

Chorus:
Pause awhile. Pause awhile.
In the humdrum of the city or behind the cloistered wall.
Early in the morning or when shadows start to fall.
See creation bending to the maker of it all.
And you have to do is pause awhile.

Verse:
Men were made to build the earth
And share it with eachother.
When you recieve Jesus your Christ
You receive your brother!

Chorus repeats.

A third one I can't remember all of is:
Man of mercy, man of woe,
Don't you know that God loves you so,
And is love, love!

That's all
Joseph D. Rudmin
I read the bits about first day in Nga, and the fear run through me. Okay about that one shirt.........do you remember how we wer allowed to wash it on Wedensady after class?
And there is nothing that can compare to those Nga walks after supper! Kabuleeta obviously you never floated on a vingi but the kuku guy came so that those who didn't get kuku from home got kuku off him...............that is if you still had money anyway.
You forgot to mention the "bank" that was Mrs. Ssenabulya........remembe day 1 your parents left you money in the "bank"........can't remember which days she was opened. But that bank never gave you interest.

I can remember placing my relatively good mattress on a bed that I felt was not designed to hold a mattress of that weight...........it's a wonder we stayed on those beds. then you met the dorm superviser who was just an s.3 but for the first week, you went around calling her "that woman". In dorm 4s case it was Sheba and then wow unto her when we decided she was our friend.

Did anyone ever go to pits expected to find the toilet paper already there?
we have really discussed the issue alot but are not making much progress and yet the clock is ticking!!!

Ok, i'll follow Penny's lead and mention the possible venues that come to mind. Only after we agree on the place shall we know exactly what preparation goes into it. So, in addition to her proposed "honey tree montessori gardens" and "maria's place" i was thinking along the lines of "Blue Africa" and "Kati Kati". These i thought are conveniently (read centrally) located, for most of us.

As for the committee, i was always one to shy away from such responsbilities, however i can promise to attend any proposed meetings, as long as am informed in time. So PENNY, how about you volunteer to lead the "steering committee". And while you're at it, you could pass on the word to GEORGINA Mrs (some name i don't know) that i have proposed her name for the in-charge of music.

Ladies, these will not be hard tasks and i am telling you, you will be glad you participated after the event is successfully behind us. Please do step in and volunteer for the various positions.

I have said my piece (that's how my father used to summarise his lectures, when he thought we were being naughty).

Eva.

In response to:Not just talk

I think 22 nd is the way to go.
I am for us meeting as the gals first. May be one day we could invite all the people who played a role in shaping us.
Congs Freda!!!

It would be helpful for all who posted anything on the blog to sign their names.
Oh men before we know it we will be inviting all the miss wasswa's, opaman etc. Don't get me wrong if it wasn't for these people may be we would not be where we are but that is too much drama involved that means we have to buy capui a ticket then instead of us being relaxed and sipping those drinks we will feel like it is Nga days again " goodies know what i am talking about" .
"locals" as everyone has decided to call them we need to get a committee steered up, we have 4 months to go not including july and Dec i think someone local needs to take a lead/volunteer and then can start spreading the word as you can see it is only 4-6 people usually bloging away and i am sure it takes more than that to organize, folks who are reading please put in your two cents we need to make this happen!!
Bazzexs

In response to:Not just talk
22nd if that's ok - it's hard to do 16th for us and then we can travel to the village that weekend.

Venue is not hard really - pick one but we might need to confirm it because of the christmas holidays and weddings et al.

Committee very essential - esp the ladies at home "locals" - because that would then take care of place, time and invites:) should we see if Capui can make it:)

In response to:Not just talk

I agree with you, Eva.

Maria et al, what date would be convinient for you?

Reason I am asking is cause I think the 16th would be better for us 'locals' who may be planning on going to the village- not to mention all that goes with Xmas preparations (taking into account children, husbands, in-laws and all).

I am sure we can work this out so people please let us know what your plans are.

Thanks,
Jackie.

In response to:Not just talk

My view is that venue will depend on the kind of bash we have in mind. 22nd December is a Friday, and if am not mistaken, quite a number of the "really hard working" Ugandans will be busy tying up a few loose ends at work...meaning that the practical thing would be for us to plan an afternoon/evening do.

Now if that's the case, i'd imagine the really outdoor places would then be impractical, i stand to be corrected. Anyhow, with that said, i must confess that most of the sensible "hanging-out joints" in kampala are outdoor, coz the comfort of the indoor venues is overpowered by either large crowds or excessively loud music or both.
Ladies, with that said, lets take our pick!!!

Organising committee is also a grand idea, however i think its better to first "concretise" our idea before we get to that huddle, coz i know its going to be one.

Eva.

I remember getting the famous coveted N'ga key ring for special mention in Social Graces when Nagadya was Minister- I think that was also the year of the golden jubilee so there were substantial "promo mats" to give (and get).

The difference of course is that a few years later these became available in the canteen at a small fee- probably due to popular demand.

Cheers,
i know places like the honey tree montessori gardens, maria's place. i would need the "locals" to beef up the list.
didnt any one of us venture into music as a side biz?
Bazzexs hats out to you..now that i look back i cant imagine how u managed to procure the services of Rasta Rob!!!
Dec 22nd sounds good to me as well.... so what does everyone want to do? i feel so old that i feel the most appropriate thing is just go to a bar have drinks till morning- if we make reservations can we get a kafunda there we don't pay for location only our drinks and food and usually there is already kadongo kamu music playing in the background if my memory of Kampala serves me right. Anyways on a serious note i think when we start getting DJ's involved/ trying to book them December being a wedding month we might me counting our losses ate Rasta Rob is in London otherwise he would have given us a good deal hmmmmmmmmm. It's great to be back on the Mpewo.. Maria for your info i don't remember the gate man's name because the few times i left Nga premises were illegal and i dare not showed my face as i hid in the back of a car!!

Location location location - very important - and hopefully we can have loads and loads of pictures as well.

We need to have an "organizing committee" - Ms. Karungi where art thou - we need your committee - we need a treasurer - someone we can send money too - should we do some sort of journal to give out that day with our picutres and info on where to find everyone :) as a token - and yes we need a DJ - good food - the works - a party to remember for years to come....

I guess a lot of the work will have to be the good folks at home but we can chip in here and there - whose drawing up the budget - again - we need an organizing committee.

In the meantime...congratulations go out to Ms. Freda Nkata - who tied the knot recently :) congratulations - i gather the Parkers were all bridesmaids :) where's the pictures....

In response to:A morning to remember

not to forget how some ladies took to reading under street lamps at four a.m!! and how we (i) had come to identify specific shrubs with specific people. you forgot to mention the old hall which if u wamlked thru on a sturday would have all its corners occupied, its a wonder we didnt have high cases of pneumonia!!!!!
Upon rising, you were under the scrutny of the dining room affairs, Internal affairs, social graces, education, etc, etc. Its a wonder there was no religious affairs to enforce the 'going for daily mass' thing.

As part of the mad morning rush, You forgot to mention the carcke period, how all those activities would get done in like 10 minutes, before we rushed off to the main hall for assembly, to try and read a bit before 'capui' or 'senabs' came in. Of course the more serious lot would prefer to freeze themselves to death behind the hall, coz there was always something to distract us inside the hall.

As for the 'nyashometer' i do recall quite a few of them; i think the 'C' stream had the majority of them...off head i recall Elizabeth Akurut and i think Kayaga Rita.

Maria, you seem to be right on spot about the term-X thing... i hope it ends soon, and the blog gets busy again, some of us need the laugther, helps us 'de-stress', if you catch my drift.
