patience is a virtue and let's take a long walk down that road - to P7 results - sorry forgive my english "kantab" results...the cut off point was like 6 so if you had 4, 5 or 6 - you were in! The excitement of going to Namagunga - packing a tin box - for some of us it was the first time we'd be away from family and friends and everything we held dear for the next 3 months.

Remember the list that came with the admission letter i vaguely remember the following items

1. Flat iron
2. Oxford geometry set
3. 5 dresses
4. 1 hoe
5. 1 Jerrycan
6. 1 broom
7. 1 tin box
8. excercise books, FULLSCAPS, pen and pencils
9. A list of textbooks - not sure whether we bought an Abbot in S1 or S3 but there was a physics book, Good News Bible?, Introduction to Biology, ....can't remember the rest

my mind can't seem to get through that list - but i remember it clearly because my first reaction at reading 5 dresses was how in the world does anyone survive with 5 dresses in 3 months! Then came the tips from friends, relatives and inlaws on how to get past the five dresses. Then there was the mad rush - don't forget the small jerrycan, pair of slippers and everything else that wasn't on the list - hardcorn, popcorn, biscuits, crisps, QUENCHER, and i must say whoever invented quencher hit a jackpot when it came to boarding school. It was the must have item on every list. In S1 I think there was only orange quencher then by S3 there was strawberry quencher

Then we came into the "pearly gates" of boarding school - i was late - i never did come early for anything - and there were the S.2s to pick us up and guide the way. "What class?" 1A? ok -then the introduction to your teacher....then the "long inspection" - pay slips - remember Sr. May ? Bless her - she can't possibly be alive ...then you were off to "the tailor" for the red skirt and white shirt and then to the dorms. One white shirt to last us 3 months!!! never mind 3 months - to last a year. Then there was the whole mad rush next visiting Sunday - everyone wrote home asking for an extra white shirt unless you had a sister or cousin who had filled you in on bringing one before. After the first week of being in boarding school all you wanted to do was go home and pick up the hundred and one practical things you really needed but didn't think to get like a torch, candles, matchstiks for the lovely days when "kara fired"

We took off our shoes put on our bright new slippers and went to fetch water and walk around with the s.2s and our parents. I think that's the first time in my life i got money to actually keep with no long list of things to do and change to bring home and didn't realize the true meaning of "easy come easy go" until it was time to head to the canteen one week later.

It would be pure genius if i could remember who the S.2 was that picked me up - i think they did it in pairs and for the life of me i can't remember who that was.

The box room was a novelty - my suitcase was next to Judy Bazzex and that's really how we met....i remember that and Penniah (banange how is she?)

And who remembers how vitally important it was to have a KNIFE!!! the number of times we screamed in the boxroom - who has a knife - especially on Tuesday evening after canteen and why did we always feel the need to eat bread right after supper/ "dinning?" "who has a tin opener" was another favorite and if you were the lucky person with the knife or the tin opener you just might get a share in whatever the contents of the tin or knife was needed for....

FIRST ASSEMBLY

Assembly was almost bearable with the red skirt but we did have our memories for one week without the red skirt - it was bad enough that everywhere you went everyone knew you were in S1 - and we all or at least i couldn't wait to get A RED SKIRT. And we had one tailor to do 100 or so skirts - talk about cost savings and when the year began it was one tailor for however many we were - but for all the six years i was in Namagunga we had one tailor and it was the same tailor who did our skirts - and the same carpenter who did those beautiful boards/gifts we came up with later - beautifully painted love hearts or paintings on a piece of wood that he would carve and shine and we would quickly send by "speedy" home - or to whatever the destination was....whoever thought of those momentos - hats off to you - remember they cost about 1000 or 500 shillings depending on "vanish" - to have or not to have vanish on your wood carving that was a serious issue when trying to determine whether or not you could afford kuku guys chicken that evening as well... i think kuku guy was pure torture when one was broke... then the test of friendship was the firend who'd share kuku with you that saturday. And why didn't kuku guy ever come after visiting sunday? God knows i was always broke the saturday before vingy and that seems to be to me the day the came the most!!!

Right...back to S1 after getting the red skirt was the social graces lecture - i loved Monday nights when we'd have improptu meetings in the MAIN HALL and Asse explain definition of "tuck in your shirt" - or Sleep Minister explain why we have supervisors and a lights off bell...the bell keeper mass - readings .and dorm lockers ...our very first meeting in the Hall where the Head Girl introduced everyone and somehow - everything in my life - every person every authority seemed so minute when put up against the HEAD GIRL of Mt. St. Mary's Namagunga - Ms. Barbara Natabi - was she our first headgirl? can't remember. She was the HEAD GIRL - and everything else paled in comparison - until she stood next to Capui and then i realized well maybe not everything....

the evening walks - those were truly truly a Namagunga thing - and i haven't had as much fun or laughter as i did as we walked around the school - made a stop at the chapel - and those stops at the chapel increased closer to the the exam time - suddenly we had a lot more to tell God - this was always after the dining - the must stop by "pits" unless of course it was a canteen day....and there are very few sunsets like the Namagunga sunset....right before the bell for prep went or on visiting Sunday when there was no prep unless you were in S4 and had mocks the next day....

Ok enough for one day - write some more and let me know what i missed out on that list

Oh my, the old hall was oooold and boy, that place looked haunted. I think i the only reason i did not completely avoid it was because we had COU and SU prayers there, so i sort of believed that the prayers got rid of the 'haunting'. But still, i don't recall voluntarily going there, 'mbu' just to hibernate for cracke.

Honeslty, there was never fresh air flowing through the place, just smells of bird refuse and dust, not to mention the birds noisily chirping away in the ceiling (was there a ceiling anyway?). In fact you were never certain if a bird had not done the unthinkable on your head. 'Kale' I really dreaded finding my name on the list of people given to house work in that place, i actually wonder what people did there in the name of house work, coz there was never any change before and after the house work was done.

Okay, apart from the birds and the haunted look, i can not deny the fact that its being a CANTAB room did not help matters. I always attached thoughts of sweaty palms and a blank brain to that place, my my my, it was really a night mare for me.

So anyway I then proceeded to ask he if she knew what a "nyash-o-meter".The look on her face..........said it all.

Anyway my question is............who was the nigerian in school?Who imported the word?

Maria getting up at 12.01am to do laundry on Saturday. There's morning people and then there's Maria Ngatunga. I could barely keep my eyes open by midnight on any given day - Maria would be done, washed and hanged by 3am and once or twice i found her ironing!!! as i was waking up - but then that could have been for mass on Sunday

So.... we fetched water or prayed for rain and drained the tanks in the nearest vicinity - borrowed buckets and basins - why didn't i ever just buy two basins - we always had t o wait for a "lala" to finish washing/share - but sharing got complicated in terms of sharing water!!! hard earned fetched water - it was a complete and selfless act when someone shared water with you - do you remember how many times you asked someone for water and there was a long story about how they just couldn't unless it was just one cup and they measured that one cup of water for you!!!

Once laundry was done - and that was truly one of my more traumatizing experiences as opposed to self reliance - i was happy to dig my way out of any patch allocated to me but laundry was one long experience.

Then there was the mad dash - not to get dorms locked so you could get everything back in. How amazing the difference it made once we left S.1 to be able to "negotiate" what time your dorms got locked with the .... can't remember who locked dorms or what the specific title was!!!

Then there was self - then we'd come and clean up and the worst part was how thirsty or tired we'd be and grab would sometimes on those Saturdays be so scarce we had very little or even nothing to share - but we made do with what we had. Then came the options - to find a spot in the box room and catch up on some match needed gossip and hope your batteries had been in the sun long enough to "recharge" so you could listen to "end of the road" - boyz II Men or whatever gospel tape was going round at the time - or in the alternative find a spot under some tree and try and figure out what Mutibwa was talking about or Mme Chemistry meant with the infamous - titrations and why yours was always the wrong colour - or the long walk to the labs to read - or Ms. Wasswa's chapter's or .... take your pick.

If we were lucky we had some entertainment - Commerce Seminar, YCS something - though YCS I think was on Sunday - some form of practice to think about or see some boys and girls on the compound...something was better than nothing and that took up the better part of the morning!

Then there was lunch and thereafter it was one of two things - if you were in S3 and it was your turn to peal for Sunday - so be it - if not - again, boxroom, sleeping in class - or booking some spot with lala's and hanging out for the afternoon. Ironing came into play at some point or not - canteen - if Doreen was in a good mood - or Sr. Cosmas had teddy's and why did she always have teddy's and expired choclate when i was soooooooooooooo broke!!!!

Thereafter we had dinner and prep and the lovely choir practice - anything to shorten saturday night prep unless you had a bad paper Monday - then you stayed and choir practice was almost non-existent.

I was thinking back to all these things as i cleaned up - did laundry and made dinner - just thinking everything i was doing or trying to do I learned from Namagunga. Even the simple graces - that social graces tried desperately to impart i find played out in my life today - so i thank you all - in your being strict, friendly and whatever manner you got me to be the most disciplined person no matter how much i rebelled - it's paid off - 20 something years later....

Your guess is as good as mine

I gather (from the newspapers) that there will be a thanx giving mass at the school chapel on sunday 26th March and NOGA cordially invites all OGs to show their solidarity with the school. I guess this is as good a reason as any for us to show that we still 'gat' the school at heart, and dispell any myths about us being the worst year in terms of OG spirit.

Other than that, i was thinking the other day about the weeks of 'wash up' in the dining/ kitchen, peeling food for the entire school and 'self-reliance'. Boy! that was quite something!!! Anyone ever wondered how we got through that "slave, slave slave... in Namagunga" as we used to sing while we did the self reliance. Penny its hard to recall this without remembering how, while you were our self reliance rep. you once gave me a portion to dig, which i felt was like twice the size of everone else's. I think i must have annoyed you some time during the week and you 'kept' me for Saturday. No pan intended.

Anyway, those are all interesting memories now. People, please arise and shine, keep those memories flowing.

Yes, dear ladies the gals who may have met when they were 13/14 on that senior block.........17 years down the road and the age of 30 is upon some. And just incase you don't fall into the 30 category this year, sit tight. The idles of March are upon you..........come next year and lo and behold 30, it is.
17 years wow huh? Does any of you remember ever hearing your parents meet someone and then say, "oh, I was in class with that one 20 years ago." And then you would think to yourself, "but mummy you are jiving. how can you remember people you knew 20 years ago?"
Well, guess what............pick a name of someone you knew when you were in p.4.

So are we girls or women? And if we are falling into the 30 category, how old are the teachers who taught us? How old must Capui be?
To the ladies whose birthdays are coming up, and those whose birthday have been................it's a pity we are not in the dinning. You would have had the priviledge of having your names read out for you to collect your parcels from the counter.
By the way, why did we have to take the parcels for the people who were in our class to the dinning to be read out? We could have just given the parcel to such one...........huh, all for the priviledge of having your name read out in the dinning room....wantresses.

Well, for those of us feeling a little bit down about being back at work, consider this... at least at the end of the day, you get to go home.As opposed to the first day back in Namagunga after the holidays.

Let's see you.... had to get there early to get a good spot in the dormitory, you needed to get a good spot in the box room (you didn't want to have your tin box on the top shelf or right on the floor for people to pour quencher on your tin box).Does anyone remember those tin boxes.Infact forget the tin boxes, can anyone remember the beds we used to sleep on. Infact I have now come to the conclusion that the reason we spent quality sleep time, cracking was not because we were swats, those beds just didn't encourage sleep. As soon as you got into them, you wanted to get out immediately.

Of new year resolutions............personally I hate making new year resolutions coz they only serve to remind me six months down the road, of how I failed to keep them.
But look at the year the way you would look at your tin box on the first day of term. How you would plan to eat the grab. So you would start with the bread (the fresh bread, coz we know the toasted bread lasted longer) and you would only pull out the hard corn or start licking powdered milk or eating "air-rated" groundnuts round about week 10 of a 12 week term.

So here is 2006 and what it holds..........the GOOD (the visiting Sundays where you wont float!YOU WILL RECEIVE........be blessed when it happens.), the BAD (Gumi caught you again, reaching into your desk just as you were about to pinch your mandazi during prep....................don't worry. This too shall pass), the UGLY (your house work is cleaning pits and not even the new ones... the old ones!................hang in there girl, it happens to the best of us. And what is it they say..........what doesn't break you, makes you!)

So roll on 2006.........are we setting in stone a date for the reunion coz personally, I would love to dance to "bamusakata", "mitchell", "shy guy", "kabani","jim".Maybe the beautiful grils who sang "sukiyaki", "let me be yours for the rest of my life", "rush, rush" etc etc can re-group and present themselves. You never know we may have a Kanyomozi amongst us. So are we doing this or not?

Of the plaque.........is it happening?

Ladies, hope you had a great Christmas and may your 2006 be blessed.May you know God's favour.

AND HERE LADIES ENDS THE SEMINARIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
